Any Scotland County resident interested in constructing
a septic system on their property must obtain an improvements
permit from the Scotland County Health Department-Environmental
Health Division. The application for improvements must be obtained
by the landowner or an authorized representative.
The Environmental Health Specialist will make a site visit
to determine if the property is suitable for installation of
a septic system. If the property meets all of the requirements
of the North Carolina General Statutes 130A (rules for sewage
treatment and disposal systems), the Environmental Health Division
will issue an improvements permit, an authorization to construct
permit, along with a layout of how the system needs to be constructed.
The Environmental Health Division inspects the completed septic
system to verify that the system has been constructed to meet
state specifications.
